Email Pope Benedict XVI...By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

(i placed this since i found this interesting and even though it doesn't directly involves technological innovation it just shows the "innovation" in the VATICAN, that even priests and the POPE use EMAIL)

The email address of Pope Benedict XVI is benedictxvi@vatican.va.

It is unlikely you will receive a personal response if you send an email to the pope, but the Holy See does read, collect and route all mail. The Pope possibly has another private email address inside the Vatican.
Pope John Paul II, the First Pope of the Internet Age
When Karol Józef Wojtyla became Pope John Paul II in 1978, email was still in its infancy. The first email had been written seven years ago, but barely a handful of people knew computer networks existed at all. Yet, John Paul II became the first email-savvy pontiff in history

In late 2001, the pope reportedly apologized for injustices committed by the Roman Catholic Church in Oceania via email. Of course, the Holy Father would have preferred to visit the Pacific nations and deliver his words of penitence in person, but email was the second-best choice.
What was John Paul II's Email Address?

Pope John Paul II's email address was john_paul_ii@vatican.va.

PLAYSTATION 3 (A SUPERCOMPUTER?)

Posted by flack_13

If Ninendo WII showcased innovation, PLAYSTATION 3 Brought the FUTURE. The playstation 3 is a gaming console and a successor to the late famous ps2, boasting power 40x better, not only does it innovate CPU power and GRAPHICS capability but it also brought the latest CD technology, the BLU-RAY.

The BLU-RAY boasts 50 gb of cd space which is the same as 71 700mb cds and 11 4.7gb DVDs. its appearance is the same as a DVD but uses a blue laser which increases the Blu-rays capabilities. The PS3 is often called a supercomputer since it contains 8 CPU's(cell broadband engine or commonly known as SPE's/synergistic processing elements) each with 3.2 Ghz of power. It is used by some scientists as a alternative supercomputer for doing their calculations and experiments like simulating nuclear explotions and the recent "FOLDING @HOME" project where it allows PS3 owners to lend the computing power of their consoles to help study the physical process of protein folding. Recently the Broadband engine of the PS3 has been used to power the fastest supercomputer today which is nicknamed, THE ROADRUNNER that has a processing power capable of processing one thousand trillion calculations per second making it 2x faster than the world's (was) fastest super computer, THE BLUE GENE by IBM. This PS3 is really a technical innovation and also a great home theater system that boasts HD quality pictures that provides 10x clearer images than regular TV's images, a 7.1 suround sound support, free DSL internet, personalization and a lot more. So what are you reading for, BUY one now or you'll regret the day that you turned a cold shoulder on a ever INNOVATIVE PS3.

Helium-3: Century 21's Perfect Energy Source

Posted by flack_13

In the modern times, man has searched and tried almost every possible way to harness energy from different kinds of resources abundant in the environment. And indeed they have succeed, today many kinds of resources that are being utilized to generate or produce energy. Mankind has even discovered ways on generating it efficiently and in large quantities. Examples of these said resource that are used in generating energy are water(hydroelectric), the sun(solar), the heat inside the earth(geothermal), wind, tides, reactions between atoms(nuclear) and fossil fuel. But throughout the years, we are constantly experiencing the consequences of these types of power generating methods such as power shortage, gasoline price hike, global warming, pollution and other environmental concerns and catastrophes. What is very concerning is that it may be possible that in the future no vehicle with a gasoline-powered engine would be able to run again due to that all fuel deposits have been drained empty and consumed by engines that very much rely on gasoline for power.

But a new energy source has recently been discovered by scientists and is said to have the properties of being the most
PERFECT ENERGY SOURCE. It is called the Helium-3 (He-3) is a light, non-radioactive isotope of helium with two protons and one neutron, rare on Earth, sought for use in nuclear fusion research. The abundance of helium-3 is thought to be greater on the Moon (embedded in the upper layer of regolith by the solar wind over billions of years) and the solar system's gas giants. It is proposed to be used as a second-generation fusion power source. Its existence was first proposed in 1934 by the Australian nuclear physicist Mark Oliphant while based at Cambridge University's Cavendish Laboratory. It is rather different from the ordinary helium here in earth because ordinary helium contains 2 neutron while Helium- 3 consist of only one neutron but both have the same number of protons.

The red areas indicate the presence of Helium-3 on the Moon's surface

POTENTIALS:

The appeal of helium-3 fusion stems from the nature of its reaction products. Helium-3 itself is non-radioactive. However, since both reactants(Helium-3 and hydrogen) need to be mixed together to fuse, side reactions will occur. Therefore in practice this reaction is unlikely to ever be completely 'clean', thus negating some of its attraction.
The amounts of helium-3 needed as a replacement for conventional fuels should not be underestimated. The total amount of energy produced in a reaction is 493 megawatt-hours per three grams of Helium-3. If that total amount of energy could be converted to electrical power with 100% efficiency (a physical impossibility), it would correspond to about 30 minutes of output of a thousand-megawatt electrical plant; a year's production by the same plant would require some 17.5 kilograms of helium-3.!!!!

Power Production:

A second-generation approach to controlled fusion power involves combining helium-3 and a heavy hydrogen. The most important potential advantage of this fusion reaction for power production as well as other applications lies in its compatibility. Potential conversion efficiencies of 70 percent may be possible, as there is no need to convert proton energy to heat in order to drive turbine-powered generators.

BENEFITS:

What makes it Different From Other Conventional Methods in Harnessing Energy?

There have been many claims about the capabilities of Helium-3 power plants. According to proponents, fusion power plants operating on helium-3 would offer lower capital and operating costs than their competitors due to
less technical complexity, higher conversion efficiency, smaller size, the absence of radioactive fuel, no air or water pollution, and only low-level radioactive waste disposal requirements. Recent estimates suggest that about $6 billion in investment capital will be required to develop and construct the first helium-3 fusion power plant. Financial breakeven at today's wholesale electricity prices (5 cents per kilowatt-hour) would occur after five 1000-megawatt plants were on line, replacing old conventional plants or meeting new demand.

Because of these features countries like China, America, and Russia have been conducting a “race towards the moon” because whichever country wins this “race” will have the capability in ruling the world.

Wirelss Electricity-energy without wires!

Posted by flack_13

There’s always been stray electricity bouncing invisibly and silently here and there all around us. But until now, we’ve never been able to capture it and power devices. But one company has cracked the code, Wire-free charging of: cell phones, gaming devices, PDA’s, handheld devices, wireless keyboards and wireless computer peripherals will soon be a reality.

A Pennsylvania-based company, Powercast, has developed a device that transmits low voltage electricity through the air. A transmitter plugs into a wall socket and transmits DC power over radio waves (RF) to an embedded receiver in the device. Currently devices within a few feet of the transmitter can be charged without messy wiring. Through it, no need for batteries, power adaptors and wires – reduce waste and clatter, allows energy conservation through its powering on feature, and a back-up power source, if we ran out of batteries.

The firm's radio-wave-receiving miracle device trumps existing attempts by "adjusting to variations in load and field strength while maintaining a constant DC voltage," essentially ensuring that only low wattages are flung around. The system basically consists of two parts -- a wall-plug transmitter and a "dime-sized receiver" that handles the real magic -- and energy is instantly transmitted whenever that disc comes within a yard or so of its tag-team partner. Get ready folks, if all goes well, Powercast will be shipping "many millions of units" by the end of 2008 -- and maybe even sooner.

To know more on how it works, visit their website at www.powercastco.com

Though, we have heard of the project TESLA, its also a wireless electricity developed by Nikola Tesla on 1899 transmitting 100 million volts of high-frequency electric power wirelessly over a distance of 26 miles at which he lit up a bank of 200 light bulbs and ran one electric motor. Anybody who knows more about wireless electricity, we would be very happy to hear your comments. Either Nokala Tesla’s or Powercasts’s or anybody interested with these magnificent breakthroughs, please feel free to post your comments.

Some Potentials of Nanotechnology

Posted by flack_13

Nanotechnology is one of the latest and powerful discoveries today. It is one of the breakthroughs in technology that really interests the world for it can greatly transform our lives to nearly perfection. Imagine a device as small as the invisible particle of a substance which can manipulate it's molecules to change it into a substance that you desire, or a computer as small as a single molecule of an object. Yes, really amazing! This amazing discovery of science can give us products and gadgets in the future that are yet unbelievable to the minds of most human beings. But believe me, it will be in our reach in the future and it can lead to a series of infinite possibilities that are still impossible today! Now, I'll share to you what I've researched in the internet.

Nanotechnology refers to a field of applied science and technology whose theme is the control of matter on the atomic and molecular scale, generally 100 nanometers or smaller, and the fabrication of devices or materials that lie within that size range. One nanometer (nm) is one billionth, or 10-9 of a meter. It is consired as a multidisciplinary field for it utilizes concepts and ideas from the fields such such as applied physics, materials science, interface and colloid science, device physics, supramolecular chemistry (which refers to the area of chemistry that focuses on the noncovalent bonding interactions of molecules), self-replicating machines and robotics, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, biological engineering, and electrical engineering. The concepts of nanotechnology was first use by a physicist named Richard Feynmanw in his talk, "There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom," at an American Physical Society meeting at Caltech on December 29, 1959. Feynman described a process by which the ability to manipulate individual atoms and molecules might be developed, using one set of precise tools to build and operate another proportionally smaller set, so on down to the needed scale. In the course of this, he noted, scaling issues would arise from the changing magnitude of various physical phenomena: gravity would become less important, surface tension and Van der Waals attraction would become more important, etc. This basic idea appears plausible, and exponential assembly enhances it with parallelism to produce a useful quantity of end products.

Applications:
Even though nanotechnology is still in its infant stage, it has already created many useful devices. As of April 24, 2008 The Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies claims that over 609 nanotech products exist, with new ones hitting the market at a pace of 3-4 per week. The project lists all of the products in a database. Most applications are limited to the use of "first generation" passive nanomaterials which includes titanium dioxide in sunscreen, cosmetics and some food products; Carbon allotropes used to produce gecko tape; silver in food packaging, clothing, disinfectants and household appliances; zinc oxide in sunscreens and cosmetics, surface coatings, paints and outdoor furniture varnishes; and cerium oxide as a fuel catalyst.

Carbon Nanotubes

One of the recent products of nanotechnology is the Carbon Nanotubes(CNTs), which are allotropes of carbon with a nanostructure that can have a length-to-diameter ratio greater than 1,000,000. These cylindrical carbon molecules have novel properties that make them potentially useful in many applications in nanotechnology, electronics, optics and other fields of materials science, as well as extensive use in arcology and other architectural fields. They exhibit extraordinary strength and unique electrical properties, and are efficient conductors of heat. Inorganic nanotubes have also been synthesized. The strength and flexibility of carbon nanotubes makes them of potential use in controlling other nanoscale structures, which suggests they will have an important role in nanotechnology engineering. The highest tensile strength an individual multi-walled carbon nanotube has been tested to be is 63 GPa. Carbon nanotubes are also ideal to be used in electrical circuits, as vessel for drug delivery, and in making stronger everyday items like clothes and sports gear to combat jackets and space elevators.

They are used as bulk nanotubes, which is a mass of rather unorganized fragments of nanotubes. Bulk nanotube materials may never achieve a tensile strength similar to that of individual tubes, but such composites may nevertheless yield strengths sufficient for many applications. Bulk carbon nanotubes have already been used as composite fibers in polymers to improve the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of the bulk product.Carbon nanotubes have also been successfully used in the construction of handlebars for mountain bikes. The handlebar, created by Easton, is the EC70 DH, which has won awards for its incredible strength and light weight.

Nanomedicine

The medical application of nanotechnology is known as nanomedicine. This involves the approaches from the medical use of nanomaterials, to nanoelectronic biosensors, and even possible future applications of molecular nanotechnology. Nanotechnology aims to develop a valuable set of research tools and clinically helpful devices in order to help create a more advanced and efficient medical facilities in the near future.

Drug delivery

Nanomedical approaches to drug delivery center on developing nanoscale particles or molecules to improve the bioavailability of a drug. Bioavailability refers to the presence of drug molecules where they are needed in the body and where they will do the most good. Drug delivery focuses on maximizing bioavailability both at specific places in the body and over a period of time. This will be achieved by molecular targeting by nanoengineered devices. It is all about targeting the molecules and delivering drugs with cell precision. More than $65 billion are wasted each year due to poor bioavailability. In vivo imaging is another area where tools and devices are being developed. Using nanoparticle contrast agents, images such as ultrasound and MRI have a favorable distribution and improved contrast. The new methods of nanoengineered materials that are being developed might be effective in treating illnesses and diseases such as cancer. What nanoscientists will be able to achieve in future is beyond current imagination. This will be accomplished by self assemblied biocompatible nanodevices that will detect, evaluate, treat and report to the clinical doctor automatically.

Cancer

A schematic illustration showing how nanoparticles or other cancer drugs might be used to treat cancer.
John Kanzius has invented a radio machine which uses a combination of radio waves and carbon or gold nanoparticles to destroy cancer cells.
Nanoparticles of cadmium selenide (quantum dots) glow when exposed to ultraviolet light. When injected, they seep into cancer tumors. The surgeon can see the glowing tumor, and use it as a guide for more accurate tumor removal. Sensor test chips containing thousands of nanowires, able to detect proteins and other biomarkers left behind by cancer cells, could enable the detection and diagnosis of cancer in the early stages from a few drops of a patient's blood.

Researchers at Rice University under Prof. Jennifer West, have demonstrated the use of 120 nm diameter nanoshells coated with gold to kill cancer tumors in mice. The nanoshells can be targeted to bond to cancerous cells by conjugating antibodies or peptides to the nanoshell surface. By irradiating the area of the tumor with an infrared laser, which passes through flesh without heating it, the gold is heated sufficiently to cause death to the cancer cells.
Nanotechnology is a great potential in improving the lives of people more likely in the nearer future. Scientists are doing their best to develop this newly discovered technology in order to utilize its value. Nurturing this is not that easy for them because it speaks of big amounts of money in conducting experiments which will take a scientist many times. I suggest that this brilliant idea be transformed into a more useful and helpful technology which will help mankind to the fullest.

Lex Venture: a Crossword Caper

Eugene and his friends invented the Word Machine for the school's Science Fair. But when they go out of to have some snacks, a jealous Thief breaks into the lab, damages the Word Machine and steals the plans and remaining parts! Now, the kids must go after the thief and retrieve their project before the Science Fair begins!

Mechanics of the game:

The parts have been scattered out across 37 different stages and it’s up to the player to gather them together. Each stage is set out in a grid formation and the player must build “word bridges” out of a random set of letter tiles that they will walk across. It’s not as easy as it sounds, especially when you have to go left or up. Sometimes you run into tight spaces and it can get tough to come up with words that are long enough to reach your destination as you spread out across the level. Other obstacles crop up in the form of puddles and rocks that you can’t place tiles on. Then, you have the bullies and dogs to contend with. Dogs will grab the parts and move them around the stage while bullies will smash a letter tile — usually the first or last tile — of the words you build, essentially limiting how far you can travel. It gets really tough but you have ways of contending with these obstacles. Bombs can clear paths out of the debris scattered throughout a stage and will also send dogs and bullies back to their starting points. Other powerups include a bunch of balloons which certain characters can use to float to different areas of the stage. These powerups are limited, of course, so you’ll have to use them wisely. Over the course of the game you’ll have to deal with 5 bosses that will really put your vocabulary and spelling to the test, so be ready to face a tough challenge!

What will you get from it?

Lex Venture is a fun mix of board crossword games like Scrabble and Upwords with elements of puzzles. The player can use letters created by the Word Machine to spell words on the board. Spelled words create paths that will guide the kids to catch all the parts of the Machine.
It features a built-in dictionary that explains the meaning of words as they are spelled out on the board. Keep in mind, it doesn’t cheat — it won’t tell you how to spell a word, but it can be big help when you aren’t sure if the word you’re trying to spell is a real word or not. This is very helpful for those moments when you don’t seem to have enough letters and find yourself in a real pinch.
